Reiki is a form of alternative therapy also known as palm healing, hands-on healing or energy healing. It involves the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to their patient, according to Medical News Today.

The word “Reiki” means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign,” and comes from the Japanese words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life energy).

A 2007 survey found that1.2 million adults in the United States had tried Reiki or a similar therapy at least once in the previous year. Reiki’s advocates say it can treat many conditions and emotional states.

Energy medicine aims to help redirect the flow of energy and remove blocks where there has been a physical injury or emotional pain that is causing illness. Practitioners say that improving the flow of energy around the body can enable relaxation, reduce pain, speed healing and reduce symptoms of illness.

The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over 20 specific areas of body, using different hand shapes, for between two and five minutes.

Healing is achieved by channeling the universal energy known as qi, pronounced “chi,” or what is known as “prana” in India.

The practitioner holds their hands lightly on or over the body while the transfer of energy takes place, holding a position until they perceive that energy has stopped flowing. The practitioner’s hands may become warm or tingle.
