Getting your car repaired can be stressful. How can you know if the shop you’re using is reliable and trustworthy?
ITEX of South Florida has you covered with five car repair and body shops on its list of ITEX members.
According to the Small Business Development Center of the University of Georgia, there are more than 175,000 businesses in the United states are classified as mechanical auto repair shops. More than two thirds of them are general automotive repair shops, per Infographic Portal, while others are service stations, specialty shops, auto parts stores or car dealers who offer auto repair services.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 670,000 and 740,000 people work in the industry, a number that has risen steadily since 2001.
Statistics show that most auto repair shops are small, family-owned businesses that serve their local area and have fewer than five employees, most of whom are technicians. Most have four or five service bays, and more than two thirds are family owned.
The average age of an auto repair shop owner is 46, and a survey by Autoinc Magazine found that many struggle to keep up with changing technology trends. Many also have difficulty finding enough good technicians to hire.
Most auto repair shop owners still rely on word-of-mouth referrals for promoting their business and most do not use online marketing like social media advertising.
Statistics also show that while small repair businesses struggle to find qualified employees, the average number of repairs requested each year is on the rise. Many Americans chose to drive their older cars for longer after the recession, choosing to spend more on repairs instead of having a car payment.
